Dead Short-tailed Shearwaters

Hello all,

Apologies if this is a frequently posted topic, as I don’t regularly post to AusBirds.

Over the past month to month and a half, I have noticed thousands of dead ST shearwaters on the beaches of southern NSW. A rough count of at least 1000 dead individuals on one pocket beach leads me to think that probably hundreds of thousands of birds have been killed or died in this event. I understand this this is called a ‘wreck’, and that it happens periodically as birds that are migrating back from the North Pacific encounter storms or poor food resources, but I was wondering if any of you had more detailed information about such events?

Thanks!

Tonya
