Location: On our Rockleigh property

Diamond Firetail (Stagonopleura guttata) (1)

Straw-necked Ibis (Threskiornis spinicollis) (1)

Elegant Parrot (Neophema elegans) (2)

I was doing 3 20-minute Backyard Bird Count sessions, for once sitting in 3 different places for 20 minutes each. It is hard for me to stay in one place, but I did see birds I rarely see. First a straw-necked ibis flew over our shed from the Murray Bridge direction. There is little water in the 25km between the river and Rockleigh and the bird would have been hard pressed to find any in the direction it was going.

Then down in the creek line a diamond firetail was hopping around a dead bush. Finally in a different creek line 2 elegant parrots were sitting in a tree. It is very dry at Rockleigh and my score was only 15 species altogether.

Location: On the banks of the Torrens near the university footbridge

Australian Wood Duck (Chenonetta jubata) (42) Have you ever seen a duck duck ? Doing an Australian Backyard Bird Count there were at least 42 wood ducks in the river and on the banks. And lots of other birds. Anyway, a magpie decided to have a bit of fun. He picked a family of wood ducks, dad, mum and 10 adolescents, grazing on the lawns. Swoop, and 12 ducks ducked. Back he came for another go, and another, and another. I took pity and wheeled my bike past the scene, and the magpie retreated.
