Birding at Bungonia NP

Hi there
This is a brief little report of my stay at Bungonia NP roughly 40km from Goulburn NSW
There were some very nice species to be found that I thought I’d share

Arrived at Rangers office to pay for camping fees:
– White-winged chough (very obliging across the road amongst the trees)
– camped at Greater Keyhole campground and Buff-rumped thornbill EVERYWHERE with some Brown thornbills.
Buff-rumped thornbill responded very well to little squeak noises I made with my mouth and came down low for nice photos
– At the same campground there were Varied Sitella, Golden Whistler, Superb Fairywren, Grey Shrike thrush, Grey fantail

If you’re up for it…My husband and two kids (8 nd 9 yr old) did a 3.8km walk which is a strenuous walk and NOT for the faint hearted and unfit.
It’s an amazingly beautiful walk called the ‘Slot Canyon’ and is worth it.
I recommend doing it on a weekend.
Steep, large boulders to negotiate in the canyon, with sheer cliffs and amazing beauty.
It was also where I saw the Rock warbler and Superb Lyrebirds performing and rather tame.
The Rock warbler was an exciting finding for sure. Not the easiest place to see one but, great to know it’s there. It allowed for very extended views as it flew from rock to rock in the open, before flying off fast toward some rocky/cave area near the bank and into the darkness of a rocky area.
White-browed scrub wren were there and Lewins Honeyeater calling a lot.
Golden Whistler and robins.
