It was an old trick of the bird poachers when they were taking the young Majors from the nests to place young Galahs in the nest so that the Majors would rear them and use the same hollow the next year. They were always active in N. S.W. in the week of the Melbourne Cup they would hand rear them and when fully grown would walk up the gangplanks of the ships in Port Melbourne with them in a cage that neatly fitted into a box of V. B. longnecks. Customs checked the first guys box but never checked the guys walking behind with a box on their shoulders. Eventually caught out after many years.
