Field Guide app for Ecuador and Peru

I will be travelling to Ecuador and Peru later this year and would like an app for birds of this region. I have books of both The Birds of Euador Field Guide by Ridgely and Greenfield and also Birds of Peru (Princeton Field Guide) but these are both quite large and an app would be much more convenient. Hi Rob, I agree with Dick, it’s a great and manageable field guide and I also found it very satisfactory when there last Dec. I found Amazon couldn’t provide it at the time in case you have trouble finding it – but had very satisfactory service from NHBS. That’s of course if you don’t want to take the risk of finding it on arrival. (Look forward to some “sensory overload” with Hummers and Tanagers!) Graeme Stevens

Hi Rob, This site is extremely helpful when travelling, as it lists all birding apps for Android and iOS (shortened url, perfectly safe): http://goo.gl/K0QCxd It lists nothing related to Peru, but you can get an app for Ecuador (only for iPad, straight url to iTunes): http://goo.gl/ooIzbe Also for Windows Phone, several applications can be found, e.g. Sibley eGuide to birds of North America Audubon Birds – A Field Guide to North American Birds iBird Guide to Birds of North America Birds of New Zealand Australian Birds (Morcombe) RSPB eGuide to British Birds Birds of the Middle East Birds of India Birds of East Africa Sasol eBirds of Southern Africa Sasol eBirds of the Kruger National Park Birds of Trinidad and Tobago Endemic Birds of Sri Lanka Birds in Europe Cheers, -Harry 2015-03-12 4:26 GMT+02:00 Rob Gully < rgully@dcsi.net.au>:

Hi Rob Not sure about apps but when we were in Ecuador we purchased a field guide called “Fieldbook of the Birds of Ecuador including the Galapagos Islands” by Miles McMullan and Lelis Navarrete. It is a very compact book (20cm x 12cm x 1.5cm deep) , smaller and lighter than Slater. The drawings are good and each bird has a distribution map , size and habitat details beside it. There are on average 8 species per page and species like gulls and raptors show different phases, underwing etc. I found it very useful. Have a good trip.
