Hi All, I’m fairly new to this birdwatching caper, so please excuse my lack of knowledge. I’m looking for a site or forum where I can find info on recent sightings, places to go, and things to see. I’ve tried ‘Feathers and Photo’s’ and Eremaea, but there is just the occasional post there. Does anyone have any idea where I can find this sort of information on a regular basis? I just need info so I can use my bird time more productively. Thanks, Jason.

Hi Jason, Here’s a suggestion that I reckon will help you immensely. Invest in these two books, which provide lots of extremely helpful information about specific birding locations all over the continent. Both can be purchased via Google – best through CSIRO: Finding Australian Birds by Dolby and Clarke, and (and do get both!) Complete Guide to Finding the Birds of Australia by Thomas and Thomas. You’ll never look back! Good luck, John Weigel

Jason, what state are you in? I would have thought major sightings would be on Eremaea’s Birdline pages. You could also try eBird (http://ebird.org/content/ebird/), which is where most surveys seem to be entered these days. You can ask here for information about particular areas, and there’s likely to be a Facebook group for your state too. Peter Shute

Thanks everyone, some good info there to get going with. I’m in Sydney, Northern Beaches. I’ve been going to a few local spots, Long Reef, Warriewood wetlands, Narrabeen Lake, and last weekend went down to Barren Grounds, which was great. I have to go to Ulladulla in a couple of weeks for a wedding weekend, so am hoping to find a good spot or two down that way. Once again, many thanks. Jason.

Hi Jason, Depending where you live, there may be a BirdLife or other birding group which organises outings, so you could join in those or visit places where they visit. Getting to know other birders is a good way to find out more about everything to do with birding. sonja
