All, I am considering lingering in Perth after a week of work for the weekend and am seeking sites for Western Shrike-Tit and Western Fieldwren. Unfortunately, all my local gen is back east. Any local souls willing to point me to a spot or two would be most appreciated. Hi Chris & Roger, Fieldwren is also at Stirling Range, though I haven’t gone looking for it myself there. Low scrub should be the go, places like Salt River Rd (northern edge of the range), and at least one of the carparks for one of the peaks is good but can’t remember which! Stirling Range would be the closest site I know to Perth that has both species (there may be others I don’t know about obviously!) Closer to Perth, for the shrike-tit: Collins Rd off Brookton Hwy (anywhere along the road with Wandoo eucalypt woodland), Flynn Rd off Gt Eastern Hwy (though the specific sites can be hard to find – let me know if you’d like more details), or Yarra Rd off Brookton Hwy or Gt Southern Hwy (opposite ends of the same road, again look in Wandoo woodland) are all a chance and within approx. 1hr drive of Perth. Collins Rd is probably most reliable overall. Lancelin area, and further north (particularly in low scrub/coastal heath) are good for the fieldwren. Lake Thetis at Cervantes is very reliable though this is a fair drive from Perth Cheers, John CC: themcneills@rocketmail.com Hi all, A good friend of mine and excellent birder based in Brisbane is looking for some advice on Western Shrike-tit and Western Fieldwren. I’ve suggested Stirling Range Retreat for the Shrike-tit, but please let him know any other good sites you might have for that or the fieldwren. As Roger isn’t subscribed to this list can you please reply to him directly (his email address is cc’d in).
