Bird listing software – does any do this?

Hi all, I’ve been using Birdbase for many years for my lists, but I’ve never been 100% happy with it. I have what seems to be an idiosyncratic way of wanting to organise my sightings, and I’m wondering if anyone knows of any software that will allow me to do this. What I’d like is to be able to define a trip spanning multiple days, and then assign species to one or more locations and days within that trip. For example, I just got back from a week in Singapore. While there, I visited several locations on different days. I would like to define a trip “Singapore” spanning dates 30 Sep – 6 Oct. Within that, I would like to be able to say that I saw species A at location P on 2 Oct, species B at location P on 2 Oct and at location Q on 3 Oct, etc. I realise that most software is set up to create lists for individual locations and single days. I don’t mind doing it this way if necessary, but I would then like the ability to link those locations/days together into a trip and then be able to look at all the sightings for that trip. Is there any software that will allow me to do this by any means apart from just putting locations in the notes, which is what I have been doing. G’day Koren I’ve not used the feature but Wings will do what you want (http://www.wings4d.com) Cheers Steve ********************************************************** Introduction to Trips A trip is just a collection of Sightings, typically Sightings related by location and time. Trips can be tied together into a Trip Summary. For example, a two week visit to Costa Rica might be recorded as a collection of trips to different locales united into a single trip summary. Trips and Data Entry by Checkbox or Checklist or Empty List: Perform data entry by checkbox, checklist or empty list as usual. If the Trip you want to add the Sightings to already exists, select its name from the Trip popup menu. To create a new trip, select the Quick Add – Trip menu item from the Action button. When the form is accepted, the trip and sightings will be created and all of the sightings will be associated with the trip. To create a trip directly: Open the [Trips] table. Click on the Add Record button. A new, blank form will be displayed with the cursor in the code field. Enter any data you like. As a minimum, you must complete a Trip code and name. Click the Accept button or press the Enter key. This saves the record and presents you with another blank data entry page. You can add as many trips as you like. When you are done click the Cancel button. You will now be presented with a list of all the trips you just added. Note that trips created directly will not be associated with any sightings. To relate sightings to existing trips see Adding Sightings. ***************************************************************************************** =============================== To unsubscribe from this mailing list, send the message: unsubscribe (in the body of the message, with no Subject line) http://birding-aus.org ===============================

Thanks to those who replied, either suggesting alternatives to Birdbase or how Birdbase could do what I want. I’m aware of the various ways in which Birdbase can display my sightings. I think my problem is with the basic definition of a “trip”, being one day at one location. I’d like to be able to be able to differentiate between an “outing” (one day, one location) and a “trip” which can contain multiple “outings”. The picture I have in my mind is that I could create a series of “outings” on day 1, day 2, etc to locations A, B, etc, but without entering any sightings. Then I could create a trip and choose the outings to include in that trip. The sightings would be entered for the trip and I could choose which outing(s) to link them to. I would then be able to display sightings either for an individual outing or for the whole trip, with one entry per species and a list of which outings I had seen the species on. The main issue that I’m trying to avoid is having to re-enter those common species that are seen in most or all locations of a multi-day “trip”. I’d also like to be able to output a “trip list” that had each species only listed once, with its relevant “outings” underneath, instead of being listed separately for each outing in a trip. Something like the Birdbase “One per species” option, but with the information on the sightings for multiple outings all displayed instead of only the first outing on which the species was seen. Ah well, I think I will stick to Birdbase for the time being, since I have so much data in it already.
