I’ve noticed in editing my own home-videos and also watching video on the web that the speed of the action seems slightly faster than actually occurs.
Is this an illusion, or is there some technical reason for it?

Is it possible you’re playing 24fps videos at 30fps, or something like that? Maybe you should prove it and measure it by making a video of a clock.
