G’day all

NZ Storm Petrels have been found breeding on Little Barrier Island, Hauraki Gulf east of Auckland.

Have any of the birds seen and photographed in Australian waters been carrying radio tracking devices?

Thanks for letting us know about this Steve – it’s great to know where they breed at last and even better that it is on Little Barrier Island which is predator free!. I knew Chris was radio tagging lots of birds this year but he’s done this before without success! And the photo in the article makes the NZSP look like all the other native species in New Zealand – completely covered in colored rings and bands!

Hi Steve,   Exciting news indeed! The article says that the transmitters were fitted to 24 birds “this year”. The only NZSP record from 2013 that I’m aware of was of 2 birds seen off Southport on the 19th Jan (with one being a very lightly streaked bird according to Paul).   Maybe the photographers that were on board need to have a closer look at their images?? I think it would be unlikely though.   Mick
