Greetings birders and happy new year to you all, I have just completed an overdue upgrade of the BARC Australian Checklist v2.0 in IOC taxonomy. Tony Palliser will upload it to the BARC website as soon as the ink is dry. http://www.tonypalliser.com/barc/barc-home.html This checklist is intended to follow the IOC World Bird Names checklist v3.3 to the letter, in terms of species taxonomy, scientific and English names, spelling and sequence. As with previous versions, subspecies are not included. There are no intended changes to the IOC list (other than abbreviating it to species and Australia) and no novel taxonomic opinions expressed by me or BARC in that regard. This upgrade includes changes the IOC made to their World Bird Names checklist in versions 2.11, 3.1, 3.2 and (draft) 3.3. up to 1 Jan 2013. It also includes some outstanding corrections to v1.1, some of which were identified by Birding_Aussers. If you download the spreadsheet you will find two worksheets. One worksheet is the full v2.0. For those who have entered their lists into v1.1 and don’t wish to start again in a blank checklist, the second worksheet contains a set of instructions for converting the old BARC Checklist v1.1 to this new v2.0. Upgrading involves inserting 27 new rows, deleting 18 old rows and replacing the entire supplementary list in one block. The upgrade worksheet will also allow you to identify the changes that have been made in v2.0. Tony Palliser’s ‘Birders Totals’ website will also have a link to v2.0. http://www.tonypalliser.com/totals.html Summary of changes: Two new species have been split by the IOC (Nullabor Quail-thrush, Western Quail-thrush). Six species new to the list have been accepted by BARC in the past year or so (Stejneger’s Petrel, Eurasian Hobby, Eurasian Hoopoe, Fairy Pitta, Chestnut-cheeked Starling, Eyebrowed Thrush). Two species are removed from the list (Linchi Swiftlet, because the IOC recognises the swiftlet on Christmas I as a subspecies of Glossy Swiftlet; Variable Goshawk, because the IOC now recognises the goshawk on Christmas I as a subspecies of Brown Goshawk). A change of taxonomy elevates the former Australian subspecies of Banded Fruit Dove to an endemic species (Black-banded Fruit Dove). Minor changes in nomenclature, sequence or formatting affect 15 species (Black-shouldered Kite, Letter-winged Kite, Hooded Dotterel, Far Eastern Curlew, Grey-streaked Flycatcher, Asian Brown Flycatcher, Common Redpoll, Yellowhammer and all seven species in the Family Locustellidae). The Supplementary List has been reduced to exclude unverified reports that have not been formally documented to a satisfactory standard following two clear rules. These changes bring the total Australian list to 891 confirmed species. Good birding to all in 2013, David James ===============================
