If you look at my website under Black-headed Honeyeater you’ll find a picture (584208D) of a bird collecting an old cigarette butt – this one is a fairly weathered filter tip and I doubt very much whether there would be much residual nicotine. To my mind the attraction in this case is simply the fibrous nature of the material.

I recollect a news item picked up in the old “Wildlife Magazine” edited by Crosbie Morrison, back in the 40s or early 50s. At a country sports meeting, a smoker threw down a butt, which was promptly picked up by a Zebra Finch and carried into a half-built nest. Unfortunately, it was still burning.. I don’t recall if the burning nest actually started a grass fire when it fell out of the tree.
