Emus bathing on a hot day

Hello Euan,

I’m attaching a pic I took back in March 1964 of Emus bathing at Toganmain Station east of Hay and in another pic I have they go right in up to the head. I have no record of how hot it was, but March on the Hay plain is usually still pretty warm. The picture is on my website as well. We spent a lot of time watching this dam from daylight to dark but it is the only time I remember the Emus bathing.

Cheers Graeme Chapman

It’s also been seen and photographed at Tidbinbilla in the ACT. See Ray Drew’s image in his message at http://bioacoustics.cse.unsw.edu.au/archives/html/canberrabirds/2007-10/msg00201.html

I have seen the (admittedly captive) Emus at the Kalkari Centre in Ku-Ring-Gai NP (N Sydney) wallowing in the small pond at the far point on the track from the visitor centre on a very hot day a number of years ago (could have been 1996). My parents were visiting at the time – we reckoned it was a cooling off strategy. Cheers Tom Wilson

    Hi Euan

I can’t remember the year but I saw emus in dams in Channel Country near Lochern National park. The weather was extremely hot-in the 40’s. Our dog started swimming at that time due to the extreme heat-previously she had been shy of water. The emus were submerged with head sticking out, appearing to be cooling down gary

I have seen similar behaviour at Hattah in late 2006. In that case it was just after dawn so I don’t think cooling off was the reason.

The emu walked right across the shallow lake with just head and part of the neck visible for most of the time.

Dog-like shaking ensued when it came out of the water.
