Hi all,
I had an hour to kill last week Thursday morning and had a look around at Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney, NSW
Amongst the Grey-headed Flying-Foxes, there were a few Black Flying-Foxes – a bit scary to witness the spreading range of this dominant species.
The Powerful Owl was at its usual spot. Noisy Pied Currawongs led me to the spot. Unfortunately, there was a large area right underneath the owl trampled down by heavy creatures (most likely humans with binoculars and/or cameras). The owl was consistently attacked by currawongs and looked quite ragged. (1) you can easily see the owl from the trail, (2) don’t spend too much time there, because you may attract the currawongs to the owl.
I found, what I believed was a dead immature Masked Lapwing. For an immature it seems a bit early in the season – or was it a late one of last year’s season? Anyway, when I touched it, it turned around and flew off! But it was clearly sick, and most likely hasn’t survived the day.
Cheers,
Nikolas
The resident Masked Lapwing on the northern beaches of Sydney don’t have a breeding season. Or if they do, it’s January – December!
They breed continuously on Mona Vale and Bayview golf courses and I suspect the Long Reef birds are nearly always at it;-)

Nikolas Haass thought it was a bit early in the season for Masked Lapwing chicks. Our resident pair have nested three times in succession, on an island in our dam, since June. The first two clutches hatched and the chicks left the island and were seen walking around the paddocks for a few days but haven’t been seen since. The third clutch (4 eggs) is due to hatch any day now. Paul Osborn Bulahdelah, NSW
