Not about birds but exciting for Melburnians. Simon Mustoe thoughtfully passed on a report he’d received from one of my neighbours, Simon Ross, that he’d seen Killer Whales just off the beach here in Mount Eliza. I spoke to the observer who said that on Sunday 19 September at 5.30 pm a pod of at least 4 animals, one larger than the others, swam northwards, i.e. towards Melbourne, off the beach on the Ranelagh Estate, Mount Eliza. I have seen one photograph which shows an adult male that matches the Antarctic form type A as illustrated in Shirihai’s Antarctic Wildlife. Apparently there are other pics available. I looked over the sea from Mornington this morning but had no luck. Persons nearer Melbourne may have more joy.
