Thank you for the link to your bird on Long Reef Golf Course. I’m very happy to know that Tawny Grassbirds are still in the general area – the nearest possible suitable habitat may now be around Dee Why Lagoon although the artificial wetlands now established on the golf course may just be big enough to support a pair of grassbirds. Back in the 1950s when that was one of my favourite areas (both golfing and birdwatching!) Tawny Grassbirds used to nest in rank swordgrass swamp up along South Creek Road but that area is now occupied by factories.
The habitat around Dee Why Lagoon then wasn’t suitable for Tawny Grassbirds but it was a great place for Little Grassbirds and Cisticolas. Since that time, the surrounds at Dee Why Lagoon have been “protected” from fire and appear to be much taller and more dense than in the past. The pictures on my website of both the nesting grassbirds were taken there and along South Creek Road.
