I am on holdiay from Qld on route to Tassy. I’m camped on the Murray River very close to the town of Cobram Victoria I keep hearing a call but for the life of me can’t see the bird for the 1000’s of Red River Gums I seem to hear the call very close to the river and not back towards the town levy bank. Unfortunately I’ve not been able to record the sound but I’m hoping someone might know

Cocka Whet Cocka Whet Cocka Whet then a break and then repeated again with a break etc.

They are both Whistling Kites. You can see the unfeathered tarsii on one bird, which is a major problem for Little Eagle. Another clear feature is the long, pale tail, which is usually the most conspicuous feature of Whistling Kite. The shape of the tail is not so easy to be sure of, because of moult, but the colour and length are good for Whistler. A Little Eagle would also look relatively larger-headed and overall stockier in build. Cheers, Chris. On 12/28/2015 5:07 AM, grant quist wrote: — Chris Corben.

Hi Grant, It is a Whistling Kite. The two species can look similar at times. Regards Greg Dr Greg. P. These were taken in Kalgoorlie this afternoon Thanks Grant

I’m in Tasmania now but so wish I were back on the Murray River but it seems that what I heard must have been a White-plumbed Honeyeater as it is a popular bird for the area … I saw many in Victoria. Just didn’t hear the call … Jude

  • Helen Horton

I think this is almost definitely a White-plumed Honeyeater. When I first started birding I used to think of it as ‘pretty sweet, pretty sweet, pretty sweet’, which would translate to your ‘cocka- whet’ quite well. White-plumed Honeyeaters are at home in river red gums over a huge area.

    Hi Jude

Have you considered a White-plumed Honeyeater? They are common on the Murray and the phonetics you have described do fit the call.

    Kind regards

Thanks Tim But I’m afraid it’s not a noisy Friarbird .. I’m familiar with that call as we have the birds at home. Since leaving the Murray River about 4 days ago, I’ve not heard the call anywhere. Never mind .. I will just go through my various CD’s .. it might pop up somewhere. Thanks for replying. Jude

How about White-plumed Honeyeater or Grey Shrike-thrush?

Hi Jude. Not sure if anyone has got back to you – by the description of your call, and its location, I’m thinking that it’s possibly a Noisy Friarbird. There is a good recording at the Birds in Backyard website – see http://www.birdsinbackyards.net/species/Philemon-corniculatus.

    Cheers,
