With reference to birders who have lost their high frequency hearing range but still want to find emu-wrens or grasswrens I would suggest you try a simple heterodyne bat detector- they are directional, they function down to 10khz or less, you usually can record from them, they are cheaper than a hearing aid- but best of all they work on bats too! I’ve experimented with my Magenta 4 on Rufous-crowned and Southern Emu Wrens plus Striated Grasswrens with good results.
