Here are a few sightings from a trip to the ‘top end’ of the Northern Territory, 10 19 May….
Hooded Parrot at Pine Creek – 10 birds observed early morning at the Rail Museum and then across the road where they appeared to be drinking condensations from the top of the Crocodile Gold Corp buildings. Note that none were seen during diligent searching the previous day from 12.00 noon until dark at all the sites around Pine Creek mentioned in Niven McCrie & James Watsons book ‘Finding Birds in Darwin, Kakadu & the Top End’. Chestnut-backed Button-quail – a single bird located within 1 minute of searching at Copperfield Dam site number 6 in Niven McCrie & James Watsons book. Red Goshawk at Mataranka – a single bird near the much reported nest site. (This took my Australian bird list to 700 and capped off a brilliant 3-tick-day!) White-lined Honeyeater several at Gunlom. Banded Fruit-dove – a single bird at Nourlangie, site number 6 in Niven McCrie & James Watsons book. Chestnut-quilled Rock-pigeon – 3 birds about ¼ the way up the escarpment on the short walk to the lookout at Nawurlandja (near Nourlangie). A pair of Barking Owls at Kakadu Lodge, Jabiru (roosting near caravan park powered site 103).
Not a sniff of White-throated Grasswren at Gunlom although the triodia habitat is in excellent condition. The area around Plum Creek has recently been burnt (again) so dipped there too.
