Vanuatu Petrel off Port Stephens?

Looking at the photograph on Eremaea for NSW-White-necked Petrel off Port Stephens by Mick Roderick and crew on Sunday I was impressed by the solid dark under primaries. If you compare it with photos of Vanuatu Petrel by Peter Harrison and Hadoram Shirihai on an image search of Vanuatu Petrel it is quite a serious contender.

Cheers

Dion

    Hi Mick,

Yes can only agree with Nikolas as many photos from as many angles no matter how bad can still help with assessment-handy if flying with Wedgies or FFoots for relative wingspans etc. It really is a strikingly dark bird in the under primaries and leading edge despite the gloomy skies.

White bellies are really not that uncommon on Providence and Great-winged Petrels-I have seen partially leucistic individuals of the latter twice and Providence often have paleish bellies when worn. If you have photos the structure should rule out anything more interesting. GW and PP are strikingly similar structurally but very different to Kermadecs and Herald. Herald should always show a pale leading edge to the inner wing.

Lots of great birds out there

    Hi Mick,

Yes, the bird looks interesting. Did you guys get further photos – especially one with more light on the under primaries?

    Cheers,

Hi Dion,   I was thinking the same thing when posting the report, and was also impressed by the ‘thickness’ of the dark leading edge. The bird was similar enough however to one we had off Wollongong in January that I didn’t really think too much else about it. I’ve been more trying to nut-out the ‘pale-bellied’ petrel we had (which will probably turn out to be a Great-winged or Solander’s I’d say).   I wonder if there were any other similar looking birds seen on the Britannia Seamount trip recently?   Mick
