Ku-ring-gai area or close-by

Dear birders

Has anyone got any suggestions where I could spend a good two days seeing birds in the areas around Ku-ring-gai or Garrigal NPs?

Any chance of seeing things like Beautiful Firetail, Tawny-crowned Honeyeater or Chestnut-rumped Heathwren?

TIA for any info.

Kind regards

Ákos

    Hi Ákos,

Chiltern Trail is a good one for birding in Ku-ring-gai Chase NP. I saw Chestnut-rumped Heathwren there a couple of weeks ago. It is also good for several honeyeater species, but not tawny-crowned. Other trails which can be good are the Waratah and Beirne. Also check out Salvation Creek and around West Head for black-cockatoos (yellow-tailed and glossy). This time of year can be good for swift parrot in flowering eucalypts.

    Good luck,

    Hi Ákos,

I’ve seen Chestnut-rumped Heathwren at Kuring-gai before along the track from Mt Kuring-gai station – follow the underpass east, go to the end of the road and a trail starts. About 1 km down, there’s a set of stone steps and that’s where they were on two occasions last summer. I’ve only seen Beautiful Firetail at the Royal NP (as well as the heathwren and Tawny-crowned HEs have been seen in the same spot near Waterfall station) and Barren Grounds. Not to say the firetails aren’t at Kuring-gai, but I didn’t see them on a couple of trips over there. Cheers,

    Tony
