Hi all
Last week I photographed a Splendid Fairy-wren in central Australia. Did I photograph race musgravi as suggested by Morcombe 2003, or did I photograph race callainus as suggested by Pizzey 2007? A photo of the bird in question can be found here: http://www.fluidr.com/photos/jonthornton/sets/72157624573811902.
We did not see any Princess Parrots last week. We spent two days looking for them on the Mereenie loop road, but had no success. We did not trespass. We also looked for Princess Parrots in the Desert Oak around Curtain Springs. No luck there either.

The specimen to which the name callainus was originally applied was actually (apparently) an intergrade between what became known as musgravei and melanotus. Hence it ended up being an invalid name for the subspecies proper. Cas
Splendid photo!
M.s. musgravi is the currently accepted name of the subspecies in central Australia. M.s. callainus is synonymous, being the former subspecies name.
I agree with John – great photo!

Hi Jon,
Looks like you’ve got the a ‘Turquoise Wren’, based on the relatively broad black breastband. My P&K lists Turquoise as ssp. callainus and Morecombe lists it as ssp. musgravi, so perhaps callainus and musgravi are synonymous?
BTW – beautiful photo too!
Cheers,
John
