Birds Australia – EagleCAM

FYI Birds Australia EagleCAM has had another successfully year with our pair of White-bellied Sea-Eagles nesting in Sydney Olympic Park. After the original nest tree fell down in February this year the eagles built a new nest in the same tree that we had out cameras last year. This shows that they were very comfortable with out cameras and our presence close to the nest. There were a lot of tree choices but they chose to stay in the same area. The nest took about 12 weeks to build, about 1.5 met. dia. and about 75 cm thick. Two egg were laird in early July and both hatched 40 days later with one day between them. Unfortunately after an accident the first chick died in the nest after abut a week. The second chick thrived and fledged on the 10th November. The video was streamed live to the Internet 24 hours a day and in 150 days received over 1.4 million views from all over the world. With a peak viewing of over 1,700 viewers at the one time. This made Birds Australia EagleCAM the second most popular nest cam in the world. Due to popular demand EagleCAM has produced a 2012 calendar to celebrate this event with over 100 photos form EagleCAMHD camera, Jon Irvine & Geoff Hutchinson. The back page may be of interest it has 15 photos showing the development of the WBSE from egg to fledge, this could be a very useful reference tool in the field to identify the age of WBSE chicks, this has never been done with such accuracy before. The calendar is available from  www.Sea-EagleCAM.org or at the Discovery Centre and all proceeds go to Birds Australia EagleCAM Project. PS. With the report of a Painted Snipe sighting at Sydney Olympic Park and WBSE nesting there it just goes to show what a fantastic place this is to go birding, and getting better every year.
