Square-tailed Kite Sighting

AUS Birders,

While out at the back of our property looking for foxes early this morning (21/11) I noticed a large raptor gliding in low over the field. Using the scope on the rifle I was able to see the tail, underwing markings and the smallish head which led me to ID it as a Square-tailed Kite. Judging from the lack of white on the face it probably was a 2nd year immature. This is the first time I have seen this species in the Fleurieu Peninsula. An interesting aspect of this sighting was the way it was gliding effortlessly around the moderately-spaced tree canopies looking for birds or nests – what I would call ‘stealth’ flying.
