I’ve been wanting to record the sound of quails flushing, because it always startles me so that I can’t quite remember what it sounded like afterwards. I’ve taken to running my recorder whenever I walk through suitable vegetation.
Yesterday I flushed a single quail at Cheetham Wetlands in Altona and got a recording. It would have to be either a Brown Quail, which I’ve seen there many times, or a Stubble Quail, which could be there, but I haven’t seen or heard one myself.
I was under the impression that it called as it flushed, but all I hear on the recording is wings beating and a very brief squeak that might be the rubber bands of the microphone shock mount stretching as I swung it, then a couple of squawks when it landed.
Would anyone like to have a listen and give me their opinions? The recording is here: http://soundcloud.com/petershute/111105-02
