Access to Eastlakes Golf Course

Hi all,

Could anyone tell me about accessing the lakes at Eastlakes Golf Course? I’d like to have a nose at the Great Crested Grebe, but didn’t fancy being pot-shotted at by golfers. Cheers,

Tony

    Hi all,

Thanks for the suggestions – happy to hear access is all above board and I don’t have to take a commando course to get in! Cheers,

Actually, as a birder & golfer, it is very frustrating. Golf courses, especially in rural areas, are generally excellent birdwatching environments but you cannot hold up your playing partners during a game to pull out the binos to check them out.

As examples, I have had a Wedge-tailed Eagle “hang” no more than 20 metres over my head as I was about to tee off at Trentham, a group of Swift Parrots in the trees alongside the 9th fairway at Castlemaine and a group of Gang-gang Cockatoos happily munching away about 20 metres to the side of a green at Hepburn Springs.

A better definition of golf is “a good walk ruined”!!

Hi all rather than pushing through a hole in a fence, if I recall correctly, one of the other roads in the series that runs off Page St (parallel to Martin Ave) – I think it might be Cowper Avenue – has a far more official looking gate with pedestrian entrance (which in turn always makes me more confident that walkers are permitted on course). As you come through that gate (or the hole in the fence) you have two fairways to cross to get to the lakes – first one the balls will come from your right and the tee is not in sight so keep an eye out as you won’t know when the next ball is coming – the second they come from your left but you can see the tee and often the golfers will wave you across. It’s pretty easy. Two points of access. First and probably best is Astrolabe Rd, Astrolabe Park. Drive to the end and easy parking. On the way in you pass the Bonnie Doon GC. Good stuff in the park and long grass of driving range. Saw Greenfinch party a year ago. Walk across a couple of fairways and you are at the lakes. Lots of walkers with dogs – so you are not alone, but head for the lakes and hug the shoreline and you should be safe from my sliced mashy niblick!. Other access is corner of Martin Ave and Donaldson St. Look for gap in chain link fence at LH end by Oleander bush.

    Cheers Chris Gregory

    Tony,

The green fees are only $20 on Tuesday and Thursday. Take a bike helmet.

    Cheers,
