I thought there might have been comment on this list about these cuts by now – last Thursday my husband and his colleagues were told 50% of research staff would go at Forest NSW research division (housed at Cumberland State Forest, West Pennant Hills).
Over the past four years they were being jointly funded by Forests NSW and DPI. The New Forests group (where my husband works) was unaffected this time, but Ecology and Forest Health were dealt a massive blow. Unbelievably, a group of colleagues who have been working together for years now have to compete with each other for only a couple of jobs. Though all the research is relevant to birds in one way or another, perhaps of most immediate relevance to this list is the impact on the Forest Biodiversity and Ecology program led by Rod Kavanagh, of whom many have probably heard or know, particularly in relation to research on owls.
It is a terrible blow to wildlife research in NSW. Here is an article which appeared in smh yesterday: http://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/cuts-dont-see-wood-for-trees-say-scientists-20110822-1j6r3.html

yes, Carl, no doubt about it. It looks like we’ll know next month the full extent of the impact of cost cutting on jobs statewide, but I thought this list would like to know about these particular cuts, and unfortunately it’s not looking good for the former DEC either.

Arwen,
The same is happening across nearly all Departments in NSW Government. I hate to think what cuts are going to happen in National Parks.
