‘Birds in Our Lives’ Art Festival on King Island – On-line catalogue

Hello fellow bird lovers,

As you all know, there are very few funds available for the conservation of our birds these days, so on King Island we are running an arts festival to raise funds for bird conservation here. The theme is Birds in Our Lives and all works have a connection to birds in . . . → Read More: ‘Birds in Our Lives’ Art Festival on King Island – On-line catalogue

Re Field Guide for Vanuatu

Hi Wendy,

We used The Birds of the Solomons, Vanuatu and New Caledonia by Doughty, Day and Plant for New Caledonia and found that very good.  Easy to pick out which species were in play from the maps.  Many of the species are restricted to just some of the islands.  We haven’t . . . → Read More: Re Field Guide for Vanuatu

Birding-Aus Digest, Vol 66, Issue 5

Re Field Guide for Vanuatu Hi Wendy, I used the Birds of Melanesia for trips to both New Caledonia 2 years ago and Vanuatu this year. It usefully divides the passerine section in to the different island groups. This makes the guide bigger (447 pages) due to repetition but still a useful feature. It gives . . . → Read More: Birding-Aus Digest, Vol 66, Issue 5

Field Guide for Vanuatu

We are heading off to Vanuatu in June. Is there a field guide that is recommended? Also, can anyone recommend any local guides for day trips? We are visiting Efate, Tanna and Espiritu Santo Islands. Tangkiu tumas Wendy Cayless

Some interesting research on the impact of conspicuous plumage on predation rates

see www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2019/04/190402164509.htm

Summary: Biologists have examined the factors that drive the predation levels of Australia’s fairy wrens. After measuring attack rates on both conspicuously and dull colored 3D fairy wren models in various habitats, they found that bright or ‘conspicuous’ plumage is not associated with an increase in predation.

Town Common

Has anyone been to Town Common recently? I will be passing through Townsville this week and wonder if it is worth a quick visit, and if so anything in particular to look for.

RFI Far North Qld (Cairns to Cooktown)

Hi all

I’ll be attending a family event in Palm Cove in mid April, and have managed to schedule some extra days for birding. This includes a couple of nights in Cooktown next week. I have a few specific targets, and would really appreciate any recent sighting or local information. I’ve sourced a bit . . . → Read More: RFI Far North Qld (Cairns to Cooktown)

Why do cattle hate koalas?

Not a bird story but intriguing I support Wildlife Victoria. Their latest communique tells the tale of an unfortunate baby Koala, rescued after her mother was killed on the ground by a herd of cows. Apparently this is not at all unknown, and in fact cattle are said to have an insane hatred of . . . → Read More: Why do cattle hate koalas?

The travesty of Toondah Harbour

The planned development of Toondah Harbour in a Ramsar-protected wetland in Queensland's Moreton Bay makes a mockery of international treaties to which Australia is a party.
