Pitta name change

Without sounding bitta about it, why are we Antipodeans last to know about, and did we have any input into, the name change fro Red-bellied to Papuan Pitta?

Tears not Cheers

thoughts on bird e-Guide Apps for iPad/iPhone

Hi Jeelan,

I have both the Pizzey and Knight and Morcombe bird apps, albeit for Android – although I wouldn’t imagine much difference between platforms. I bought the Morcombe app roughly 3 years ago and have loved every feature except the bird drawings and locality maps. They really aren’t very good at showing fine detail. . . . → Read More: thoughts on bird e-Guide Apps for iPad/iPhone

IOC7.1 has changed Red-bellied Pitta

Has anyone noticed that the latest IOC list, version 7.1, has split Red-bellied Pitta, Erythropitta erythrogaster? The common name for Red-bellied Pitta has disappeared. The scientific name now belongs to Phillipine Pitta and the bird in Australia is now the Papuan Pitta, Erythropitta macklotii (sub-species digglesi).

Regards,

Tania

John Clarke

Sad to hear of the passing of John Clarke. I’d long been a fan of his unique brand of satire, first encountering him as Fred Dagg (using the classic intro “errr, yeah g’day”) on 3-RRR radio in the late 70’s or early 80’s. Of course he was already well known in his native New Zealand . . . → Read More: John Clarke
