Fwd: Another Sunshine Coast Wetland Wrecked

A campaign to secure protection for the recently drained Yandina Creek Wetland on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast continues, but in the meantime, a much smaller though important local wetland has been gutted.

The Parklakes Wetland near Bli Bli had provided refuge for good birds including nesting Australian Little Bitterns and Australian Painted Snipe. That wetland has . . . → Read More: Fwd: Another Sunshine Coast Wetland Wrecked

Chasing boobook sound recordings – lurida and leucopsis

I have been contacted by a student who is doing a thesis on call variation in boobook owls, supervised by Frank Rheindt who has been looking at their genetics. She is chasing any recordings of the lurida and leucopsis (ie tropical north Queensland and Tasmanian forms).

She has recordings from or will contact the obvious . . . → Read More: Chasing boobook sound recordings – lurida and leucopsis

Dear Barney – thank you for the photos. As you say, they are clearly Dusky Moorhens and the Coot does not seem upset by their presence and seems to be sharing the weed quite amicably. I think that is quite unusual. There must have been no shortage of food there. Thanks again. Best wishes, Anthea . . . → Read More: Emailing: IMG_05361, IMG_05371, IMG_05381, IMG_05431, IMG_05651, IMG_05661, IMG_05351

Vale Glenn Holmes

I noted with sadness (via a mention by Mark Carter) that Glenn Holmes has passed away. I knew that he had been ill for some time. Glenn was a great birder, and he often expertly assisted me as a guide in those distant days when I operated bird tours. Since then he has freely given . . . → Read More: Vale Glenn Holmes

Differrent breeds co-operating

I would just like to point out that I wasn’t the only one that saw the Coots feeding the Moorhens, it went for the full week we were there and was

happening less than ten mts from where we were sitting on the back deck photographing a Sea-Eagle trying to teach its young one to . . . → Read More: Differrent breeds co-operating

Different breeds co-operating.

I spent a week on a houseboat on the Murray over New Year and around the boat there were a few Coots and Dusky Moorhens.

The creek we were on the water was very clear and you could see the weed growing up from the bottom but stopping 600 mm from the surface.

WT Needletails

Approximately 150 White-Throated Needletails hawking very low over Palm Beach, QLD at 0800 today. I regularly see small flocks of 20 to 40 birds in the area, but the size of this gathering and the fact that the majority were around power line height made for some spectacular viewing.
