Back from Finland to Australia, NSW: Sydney, Moss Vale, Parkes etc.

But in the end we only get what we get, and that’s it. A lot relies on good luck and coincidence. But still wishing for . . . → Read More: Back from Finland to Australia, NSW: Sydney, Moss Vale, Parkes etc.

New bird for my back garden in NE Adelaide

Heard an Olive-backed Oriole calling in a eucalypt in my back garden at Vista today at 10.20 a.m. It called several times and was being harassed by Red Wattlebirds. I had good views of it before it flew off to adjoining gardens and I lost it. Tony. x breeding in the wild.

It was an old trick of the bird poachers when they were taking the young Majors from the nests to place young Galahs in the nest so that the Majors would rear them and use the same hollow the next year. They were always active in N. S.W. in the week of the Melbourne Cup . . . → Read More: x breeding in the wild.

More amazing hybrids. I may have mentioned this one before

Speaking of hybrids. In the wild it takes a bit more to create a hybrid but when two lonely birds are housed in the same aviary one never knows…. I was shocked with this one. A blue Princess Parrot female with her mate a male Scarlet-chested parrot. And yes they produced a chick that looks . . . → Read More: More amazing hybrids. I may have mentioned this one before

X Breeding in the wild.

Cross breeding in closely related parrots in the wild is well known, but the reasons why and the associated life history mechanisms are not. Many years ago when, with Ian Rowley, I was lucky enough to study Major Mitchell’s Cockatoos for some years in Western Australia, we were able to document, using marked individuals, just . . . → Read More: X Breeding in the wild.
