Hi, I am heading to the Mount Magnet & Paynes Find areas of Western Australia in the next two weeks and would like to know if there have been recent sightings of Western Quail-thrush, Copperback Quail-thrush or Grey Honeyeater from these areas. Thanks in advance.

Pacific Swift Annual Summary 2016

G’day Bird enthusiasts

Two months ago I had the joy of attending the bi-annual Swift conference in Poland, where the main theme of the presentations was how to bring Common Swifts back to the cities of Europe. However, I learnt from British researchers that there is a population of Common Swifts living in . . . → Read More: Pacific Swift Annual Summary 2016

Shriketits

Peter Lansley mentioned whether the shriketits should be split.

I have no doubt about it. If you play the call of an Eastern Shriketit to a Western Shriketit it takes no notice.

I spoke to Leo Joseph quite a few years ago. He thought it was likely they were different, but he doubted whether anyone . . . → Read More: Shriketits

Round Hill Question

Hi Carl & list, I notice in my bird books that “Round Hill Nature Reserve” is not always “open” and that we should phone Cobar office of National Parks and Wildlife. Is this step necessary? What does it mean if it is not open?

yellow-rumped pardalote

Hi all, in response to postings by John Leonard & James Mustafa among others, I agree that the spotted/yellow-rumped pardalote Pardalotus punctatus/xanthopyge group needs further taxonomic review. By the way, I studied vocalisations of the south-eastern subspecies of Striated Pardalote P. striatus (which supported their conspecificity) and cannot in fact recall writing about the spotted . . . → Read More: yellow-rumped pardalote

Northern subspp Shriketit ? Princess Parrot . Feeding tray

Hi All.

Any tips on best date, time and particularly places to see Northern Shrike-tit?

Also should be a good season or three for Princess Parrot, any recent sightings in the wild?

Here in Mulgoa Valley spring has sprung with a vengeance, very wet and soggy. A locally rare Brown Cuckoo-dove joined . . . → Read More: Northern subspp Shriketit ? Princess Parrot . Feeding tray

Trip Report Round Hill – Lake Cargelligo August 26-28 2016

HI Jenny,

Yes that is exactly my approach to such sites. That is driving very slowly listening for activity. I recall Owlet Nightjars calling (during the day – and we saw three of them) and Turquoise Parrots were the most common Parrot encountered. It really is a special locality.

Cheers, Tony

WB sea eagle feeding in roadkill?

Last week I drove through Normanton twice for work and saw a WB Sea Eagle feeding on carrion (just near the Flinders River) on the roadside with Wedgies and Whistling Kites. Same location each time. It struck me as unusual. Any other observations of this feeding behaviour?

Cheers, Alex
