By Birding-Aus, on May 16th, 2017 When we were living 135km east of Esperance, north of Cape Arid and west of Israelite Bay, we regularly used to see bustards in the paddocks. I am not surprised that they have been reported near Eyre Bird Observatory. Ann Millard

By Birding-Aus, on May 15th, 2017 We will be trialling a big new boat for pelagic birding trips off Mooloolaba on the Sunshine Coast. We will be able to take up to 23 people in what would be the largest and most comfortable boat doing pelagic birding charters in Queensland waters. The deal I have hammered out gives us 5 hours . . . → Read More: New charter boat for Sunshine Coast pelagics
By Birding-Aus, on May 15th, 2017 Hello Phillip,
Peewees sometimes get their feet entangled in twine, possibly as a result of trying to collect it as nest material.
If the twine becomes tight enough it eventually amputates their toes , or foot.
Cheers

By Birding-Aus, on May 15th, 2017 Following a post on the Facebook page about using the Ocker-Post tracking service to monitor the route a book took to travel all round Melbourne I have been doing the same on my volume. Its more fun t’han radio tracking shorebirds!! (And somewhat harder to explain.)
It left Prahan at 1452 on Thursday last and . . . → Read More: Tracking
By Birding-Aus, on May 15th, 2017 There were at least two Bustards sighted by Bill the new caretaker at Eyre Bird Observatory, I think he said they were on the North Track, that was last week. Those records would have been forward to BirdLife I think. Cheers Geoff Hutchinson

By Birding-Aus, on May 14th, 2017 Peewee at the Canterbury Railway Station (inner west Sydney) has no toes on right foot. Like the foot rot issues in feral pigeons. It seemed to be unaffected walking around the platform.

By Birding-Aus, on May 14th, 2017 The concept of ‘responsible’ or ethical duck shooting is very rubbery and probably is probably more of a United States concept [where people believe they have a god-given right to shoot things].
One aspect is what the animals are being killed for. It would have to be for food, conservation purposes [removal of harmful invasives . . . → Read More: “Responsible” duck shooting.
By Birding-Aus, on May 14th, 2017 Hi Laurie, To be pedantic, Southern States are those South of the Qld/ NT border in this context, NSW and Victoria in particular, but any contemporary Australia Bustard sightings in SA, or in WA South of Meekatharra would be interesting.
They were plenty around Broome, in the NT and Qld 25 years plus ago . . . → Read More: Birding-Aus Digest, Vol 43, Issue 13
By Birding-Aus, on May 12th, 2017 Hi
I have seen Silver Gulls and many of the herons/egrets puddling with their feet in the sand/mud to expose food but yesterday was the first time I had seen Hooded Plovers doing this. The pair on the NSW South Coast were following the waves out, puddling and pecking at what ever they had exposed . . . → Read More: Hooded Plovers puddling
By Birding-Aus, on May 12th, 2017 Maybe I am a little out of touch but I struggle with linking words like ‘good’ or ‘responsible’ in the same sentence as sporting (oxymoron?) shooters. I am no shrinking violet and in the course of work here and overseas I have killed countless animals in any manner from crushing roo skulls with rocks to . . . → Read More: Responsible duck shooting.
