By Birding-Aus, on June 18th, 2017 I notice that the IOC (as of June 9th) is considering the split of Purple-backed Fairywren (Malurus assimilis) from Variegated Fairywren (Malurus lamberti).
I would assume that ‘dulcis’ and ‘rogersi’ and ‘bernieri’ would be part of ‘assimilis’?
I am a little surprised. I thought that ‘dulcis’ and ‘rogersi’ were the very different ones, and I . . . → Read More: Purple-backed Fairywren
By Birding-Aus, on June 17th, 2017 As an aside, if anyone is visiting Doi Inthanon (the highest mountain and great birding), could you please contact me in advance. Several years ago on a trip with Phil Maher I bought a vest (black mess, about 20 pockets, etc) at the store at the top for AU$15. Brilliant. But it is now deteriorating . . . → Read More: Chiang Mai birding trip
By Birding-Aus, on June 17th, 2017 Hi Have been asked by a local environment group who do regular bird walks at a local wetland if I can recommend a cheap scope/tripod. Budget around $5-600. www.ozscopes.com.au/spotting-scope?dir=asc&order=price appear to have quite a few possibilities but has anyone any experience? Thanks Dave

By Birding-Aus, on June 16th, 2017 Thanks to a (BirdQuest) timetable change I will have a week between tours to Cuba and Costa Rica in early April next year. One idea I had was to go to Puerto Rico to see the Tody (to complete the set!). The other endemics would of course be nice, especially the screech-owl as that would . . . → Read More: RFI Puerto Rico
By Birding-Aus, on June 16th, 2017 I am planning a trip to Cape York from Townsville. Hope to leave on Sept 18 and return Oct 9. There are about 80 species up that way that we would like to see. We will be a group of 3 – me, my wife and my daughter. We have the use of a medium . . . → Read More: RFI Trip to Cape York
By Birding-Aus, on June 16th, 2017 Can someone answer this question I had from someone at work, I can’t find any information.
Has it been observed that any species of cuckoo, having laid an egg in a host nest, then defends that nest against predators or other cuckoos trying to parasitise it?

By Birding-Aus, on June 15th, 2017 Hello Falk,
I’ve searched the literature including HANZAB and Harry Frith’s Pigeon book and when calls are discussed it is always the “adult” that is referred to which in context always seems to be the male – no mention of females calling at all.
I can understand the territorial calls only being given by males . . . → Read More: Rose-crowned Fruit-dove calls?
By Birding-Aus, on June 14th, 2017 Hi all,
I hope someone can help me with this as I couldn’t find anything online and I don’t have access to appropriate literature atm.
Do the calls of male Rose-crowned Fruit-dove differ from those of the females or are they more or less the same?
Many thanks,
Falk

By Birding-Aus, on June 13th, 2017 Has a report been lodged with Birdline? There’s nothing there as at midday 13 June? That’s close enough to home and/or work for an early or late attempt. Thanks Tom
