Off-topic mystery

Hi all,

Slightly off topic but hopefully someone can help.

I have a metal-framed vinyl swimming pool, 3m diameter that I set up for the kids in the back yard every summer.

On Monday I found a dead Noisy Miner in the pool.

On Tuesday another.

Today, a dead kookaburra.

Cairns/Daintree

Hi Jason,

We had great accommodation at Daintree Valley Haven which is run by a lovely couple who really care about the environment. There are comfortable cabins where you can cater for yourself or they can supply meals. Best is the fact that you are surrounded by lush rainforest, overlooking the river, with BBP Kingfishers . . . → Read More: Cairns/Daintree

Whipbirds

During my morning walk here at Brooms Head this morning, I had the good luck to watch a pair of Whipbirds dancing around in a dead fallen tree and the relatively cleared low bush. Lasted for about 40 seconds. Certainly not something I’d seen before.

cairns/cape trib advice

Dear All,

We are going to take a trip up to Cairns in March for a week for birding. Our idea is to cover the distance between Cairns and Cape Tribulation.

I was hoping to solicit comments on our rough itinerary. It goes like this:

Cairns/Cape Trib

1. Consider taking a hinterland route via Mareeba and Julatten instead of the coast. There are lots of good birding places inland. You can find out the birding spots in two books currently in print “The Complete Guide to Finding the BIRDS OF AUSTRALIA” and “Finding Australian Birds” both published by CSIRO and possibly available . . . → Read More: Cairns/Cape Trib

One day in Japan

Hi all,

I’ll be in Japan in March and will have maybe one free day to do some birding.

I will probably have the option of spending that day in either Kyoto or Osaka.

Does anyone have any tips about which would be the better option? I have seen some info on the Nanko Bird . . . → Read More: One day in Japan

Mallacoota

I am going to Mallacoota next month, and wonder if any local birders can give me advice. I know the area has tons of species, but I am particularly after Ground Parrots, Beautiful Firetails, Emu-wrens and Turquoise Parrots.

I know the Nadgee park across the border is a Ground Parrot site, but it’s a . . . → Read More: Mallacoota
