One day in Japan

Hi all,

I’ll be in Japan in March and will have maybe one free day to do some birding.

I will probably have the option of spending that day in either Kyoto or Osaka.

Does anyone have any tips about which would be the better option? I have seen some info on the Nanko Bird . . . → Read More: One day in Japan

Mallacoota

I am going to Mallacoota next month, and wonder if any local birders can give me advice. I know the area has tons of species, but I am particularly after Ground Parrots, Beautiful Firetails, Emu-wrens and Turquoise Parrots.

I know the Nadgee park across the border is a Ground Parrot site, but it’s a . . . → Read More: Mallacoota

Possible swift

I was driving on the Princes Highway , North Geelong this morning when I saw what appeared to be a dead swift on the nature strip. Hi birders,

Unfortunately we have to go through all this again down here in Victoria. Another season of duck shooting starts on March 17th. Hi all Does anyone know if the Aleutian terns are still hanging about… I just happen to be in the area today and wondering if they’re still been seen in the last couple of days or where they’ve been spotted the most and if they’re hanging out with other tern species…? Swift encounters

I’ve seen this stack of swifts that Martin describes on a storm front in the hills 20 miles west of Noosa in the early ’80’s. Sent from my iPhone

WHITE-THROATED NEEDLETAILS & Fork-tailed Swifts in BIG numbers last week at Wonga Beach & Lower Daintree, FNQ

with the monsoon arriving in FNQ about 2-3 weeks ago, I’ve been noticing a huge increase in numbers of winged ants/termites getting about – this includes lots of the winged & big queen green ants which are rather spectaular looking critters!

this event has of course attracted the big swifts to the area, and I . . . → Read More: WHITE-THROATED NEEDLETAILS & Fork-tailed Swifts in BIG numbers last week at Wonga Beach & Lower Daintree, FNQ

A query about Eastern Spinebills

I am hoping the brains trust out there will help us to answer this. A friend has been observing Eastern Spinebills in her garden in the lower Blue Mountains for many years. She posed these question about their nesting habits: > My observations on eastern spinebills’ nest-feathering has prompted me to ask more questions around . . . → Read More: A query about Eastern Spinebills
