Regent Honeyeater

Some notes I’ve put together here on the Regent Honeyeater. Some hopeful signs for this critically endangered species, but a long way to go:

A linguistic question

I am currently doing a little research into Azure Kingfisher. The references I have consulted refer to species in terms such as ” Sedentary or resident”. I wonder what the difference is between those terms in the context of ornithology: suggestions welcome!

Fraser/Birds in Their Habitats

Hi Folks

A plug. I have just finished Ian Fraser’s Birds in Their Habitats, and enjoyed it muchly. A very deft blend of descriptions of field experiences (some truly amazing) and the relevant ecology, natural history and evolutionary biology; crisp, clear, and very up to date. If anyone is looking for a gift book for . . . → Read More: Fraser/Birds in Their Habitats

Bali bird park

Does anyone have any comments on the Bali bird park? Thought it might be worth a visit while I’m there. What Australian birds might be there?

& haven’t I also been saying…

A recent trip report from a BirdsQld high-country campout in FEB includes this absence report – “we didn’t see or hear … any of the migratory Cuckoos, although they are still present on in some places on the lower ground near Brisbane and the Fassifern Valley.”

In recent years I have observed the unusual . . . → Read More: & haven’t I also been saying…

This year no young birds were creched here on any days. Such is the decline locally that, though common in the past, the species is now rarely seen here at all.

Birding-Ausers and Mike

While driving to Thredbo on Good Friday (30/3/18) I saw at least 3 White-throated Needletails soaring over the road near Shelley in NE Victoria (between Tallangatta and Corryong). Weather was clear as a bell and the birds were seen just above tree height (30+ metres)
