Blue Gum Swamp Winmalee RFI

Hello, I’m an American birder who is going to be in Sydney next week, and I would love to go birding at Blue Gum Swamp in Winmalee. I’ll be staying in central Sydney and I won’t have a car, but I would be happy to take a train out to some suburban station (like Penrith maybe?) to meet someone who could then take me birding at Winmalee and maybe even some other Blue Mountains sites. I could be available on Thursday the 26th, Friday the 27th, or Saturday the 28th. Is anyone interested in spending some time showing an American birder some Aussie birds? Of course, I would be pleased to pay for petrol and lunch. Werner and I visited the start of the Blue Gum Swamp track briefly this morning just to check it out for a planned walk later in the week. There are no barriers to walking down to the swamp. The area to the north of the car park is severely burned but we were told by a cyclist, who was just returning from a circuit ride that the damage only extends about half a kilometre out on the Shaw’s ridge track. Barry, Andrew and all, Yes, the recent fire did indeed affect the Blue Gum Swamp area and the track is currently closed. From the OEH website http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/NationalParks/FireClosure.aspx : “The Shaws Ridge Precinct of Blue Mountains National Park remains closed until further notice. This includes the Blue Gum Swamp, Shaws Ridge and Springwood Ridge Fire Trails.” There are plenty of other great places to go in the Blue Mountains. Many of the lower mountains creekside walks give you nice wet-forest habitat and good bird diversity at this time of year. For example I’d suggest somewhere like Birdwood Gully at Springwood, or Murphys Glen south of Woodford. Maybe a Blue Mountains birder can tell us (probably a few people on the list interested) how Blue Gum Swamp was affected by the fire and the backburning to control it.
