While in Hawaii a couple of years ago I went out with my indigenous sister to visit sites near Hilo that she’d last visited five years previously. Leilehua was horrified to find that endemic birds had literally disappeared. During my stay we heard that Peruvians resident on the island, had set up a protection society for the introduced Coqui frog. Sacred in their native country they believed the frog should have the same status in Hawaii.
