Hi,
A question for Sunshine Coast birders………… are you seeing any migratory terns right now anywhere in the region?
Last month, only 2 weeks ago, I did a survey of the Noosa sandbanks, and came away with more than 600 migrants, overwhelmingly Common Terns, with the odd Little Tern thrown in. Most of the numbers came with the evening arrivals from the sea.
Yesterday I did the same survey, and not a sausage. No migrants. Neither on the sandbanks during the day, nor in the evening arrivals from sea. I was surprised to see a whole group disappear at this time of year. Last year we had migrant terns through the whole winter. In the space of two weeks all the birds have disappeared, presumably following food.
Yesterday, as two weeks ago, there were several hundred Crested Terns present.
Is anyone on the Sunshine Coast seeing migratory terns, particularly Common Terns?
Just curious………. as usual. Oh, we did have something interesting – a dingo/wild dog on the north spit as evening fell. Second time seen, last time a different animal, but it was some time back.
Cheers,
Jill
