RFI Sabah

Hi all,

Yes I know this RFI has been posted many times but I seem to be getting some conflicting info from the past postings and the guide books etc. Plus this is a backpacking mission and I won’t have the luxury of knowing exactly when I’ll be there, which I am starting to suspect could be an issue for me.

I am just wondering the following about south-eastern Sabah (where I intend to be in around August, as long as I can navigate from Flores to there easily enough!):

– if I had to choose between the Danum Valley and the Tabin Wildlife Resort, which would be best for birding in general? (local specialist species in-mind too) + would a visit to Sepilok be worthwhile to supplement a 3 day stay at one of these places? I am also visiting Peninsular Malaysia (incl. at least a visit to Teman Negara) – do I really need written permission from the Danum Valley Field Centre committee to stay there as a ‘non-researcher’? Does anyone have experience in staying here as a ‘visitor’? The rainforest lodge just isn’t an option I’m afraid. – are there any budget options at Tabin Wildlife Resort? The Bradt guide mentions “eco-tented platforms” with share bathroom etc, but this doesn’t appear on the Tabin website – most importantly, does one really need to book-ahead for visiting these places? It will be almost impossible for me to predict a date that I would be arriving in the area (such is the nature of the journey). ie is it feasible to lob into Lahat Datu and visit Danum in the next couple of days. I’ve heard that red tape is big in Sabah. – is independant birding easy enough? I’m familiar with most families, having birded quite a bit of SE Asia before. Its more the logistics I’m thinking of (access etc). – re: my earlier mention of getting there from Flores, does anyone have experience in crossing into Malaysia (Tawau) from Kalimantan (Tarakan)?

Many thanks in advance to anyone who takes the time to respond (they are just brainstorm questions…no need to try and answer them all!).
