Mordialloc Arctic Tern

Greetings all,

Well, this was my first twitch in close on five years, how could I pass up the chance to finally snare a bird that has eluded my all my life?! Ironically, I only re-subscribed to Birding-Aus on Wednesday, and the first post I read was about the Tern!

Upon arrival at the hotspot on Mordialloc Beach around midday, Mike, Simon, Bill and Shirley were already scoping the Tern, so this was possibly the easiest twitch of my life. So darned satisfying, and reminded me of what I had been missing, being a lazy git and all. Ironically, the bird was only a couple of hundred metres down the beach from the very spot where, back in 1977, a recalcitrant youth, who had sneaked down to the beach for an illicit ciggie after school, almost trod on and thereby re-discovered Australia’s first ever Black-tailed Gull, after months of intensive searching of every beach in Victoria. The next day the Gull moved to Rickett’s Point, and I’ll wager there’s a few on this forum who saw the Rickett’s Point beast! Good memories.

So thanks to all involved, especially Mike’s post this morning – “Arctic Tern there NOW!” How could one not answer the call?
