Hey all, Ashwin Rudder and myself will be travelling north from Sydney to the Byron Bay area this time next week and would love some up to date information regarding where best to see any of the following species. We will be staying at Willi Willi (one night), Woody Head, Iluka (one night), Rummery Park Campground, Whian Whian (2 nights) and Forest Tops in the Border Ranges (2 nights): a.. Beach Stone-Curlew – will check in at Soldier’s Point and Old Bar, but any other sites would be great b.. King Quail c.. Bush-hen d.. Marbled Frogmouth – one of our main targets e.. Rose-crowned Fruit Dove f.. Superb Fruit Dove g.. Pale-headed Rosella h.. Albert’s Lyrebird i.. Forest Kingfisher j.. Collared Kingfisher – Tweed Heads area most likely? k.. Little Bronze Cuckoo l.. I can hear… Noisy Miner, Crimson Rosella, Fan-tailed Cuckoo and Striated Pardalote.

I would hazard a guess at Olive-backed Oriole as I’ve heard them conduct just as impressive mimicry and the location matches nicely. Superb Lyrebird would be my second guess.

I recorded ALL my WTNT sightings on lists in Eremaea.

I was very pleased to see needletails on almost 15 separate occasions over this season. This is in contrast to last (Summer 2010/11) where I only saw 1-2. However the majority of my sightings from this Summer were of single birds to small flocks (5-10). The most I saw at one time was 50-60 over a 10 minute period in clear, calm conditions.

I have heard the odd Boobook and Powerful Owl here in Gladesville of late so its nice to know they’re getting around. Especially the Boobook as the PO isn’t all that surprising with the Lane Cove River population being so close by.

Hey all,

for those interested in the recent sightings of Little Button-Quail in Sydney’s Centennial Park; I visited the site where they have been recorded this morning and during a 2 hour period of traipsing through the area I found NO Little BQ. I did, however, flush about 6 Brown Quail, some of which I got very good views of running around. I left when it began to rain heavily.

There is a lot of native grass in the area and I don’t doubt the observer’s ID so by all means it is definitely worth going and checking out.

Friends of ours who own a small property just west of Albury have been keeping goats/kids for the past year or two. Along with around about 15-20 goats, they have a pair of Alpaca and two geese (don’t know if they’d act as a deterrent although they are very rowdy). They are yet to have had any problems with losing kids and while I was staying on their property two weeks ago, I twice observed a pair of Wedgies circling the ridge above where the goats feed and, at the time, were looking after young.

Also, a few years back, my grandparents owned about 1000 goats on their property at Coonabarabran. They had no problems with eagles thanks to their pair of Miramars, I think the same dog breed that have been used to deter foxes from Little Penguin colonies.

Hey all,

last week (7th) I spotted a pair of Ostrich from the window of a bus while travelling South from Sydney to Berridale. They must have been just before Bredbo or in between this town and Cooma on the West side of the Monaro Hwy in a fenced paddock. I’m unaware how common Ostrich farming/keeping is and have never heard any reports of the species or its credibility in this area so any information would be appreciated.

Hey all,

just a quick question: If you, like many birders, record ‘year lists’, do you tick birds only on sight alone or do you tick birds from call (even if you don’t end up seeing them). Personally if I hear a bird that would be new on my year list, I tick it as this saves me time trying to see a perhaps common species that I’ve seen many times before and so gives me more time to focus on birds I may not have seen. One questionable aspect of my practice is the fact that, if I hear a bird that would be a lifer for me and tick it on my year list that it only remains as a year tick until the day I do end up seeing and identifying the species in question.

Basically I’m asking if you tick by sight or sound on your year list, not your life list.

I would appreciate any/all answers!
