On 1 March I requested the following information:
We will be making a visit to Alice Springs soon and I was wondering if anyone
has any recent (2017 ideally) observations for Spinifex Bird, Rufous-crowned
Emu-wren and Dusky Grasswren at any of the regular sites please.

As I heard nothing we searched some of the ‘Alice’ sites and I can at least indicate that all three species were present at the Santa Teresa 31.5km Spinifex ridge. The car tyre wedged in the pylon site! (as measured from the airport roundabout). A relatively easy site to cover from the road side or the track along the ridge to the ‘dump’ area. The Spinifex birds were very hard to see and were just over the high ground beyond the dump area when staying on the ridge.
The Emu-wrens were seen 3 times near the road and numbered about 12. The Grasswrens were also near the road.

Dusky Grasswrens were also at Simpsons Gap almost inside the gorge. Despite visits to most other locations in the books I would guess the Emu-wrens and Spinifex bird would be very difficult to see unless overnight camping was planned.

For those unfamiliar with Birdforum – Rare bird information sub forum, you need to register with your e mail and little else. It’s relatively easy so you can be on in 15 minutes, make sure you create a username that is unique ie not just your name as it may reject your application. There are some very detailed analyses of the two web photos of the claimed night parrot by some folk who are serious about photographic evidence of rare bird records. In the UK we have suffered from a number of fakes in recent years, mostly brought out into the open by Birdforum members. Some of these were high profile rarities where people travelled miles to look for them so it is clear that any sort of tampering of such globally significant bird photos are of serious concern. I recommend anyone to look at these postings so they can make up their minds what to believe, quite frankly it does not look good when large portions of the photo are clearly faked, indeed the whole picture could indeed be contrived. Shoot me down if you like but please look at the details first. I’m sorry that this has possibly all come about after I initially posted a message on Birdforum of the discover , taken from the posting on Birding Aus back a few months , of course then it was posted in good faith that the records (ie photos) were genuine. Many people In the UK take a real interest in Australian birds so we are all now very disappointed in the current position. If there is someone who could get the truth out in the open I’m sure we could all clear this up. Dear Birders I’m just looking at possibility of a week at end of November, having just read Thomas and McBride I have a couple of questions please regarding current status. White-chested white-eye; is this still viable? Providence Petrel; not sure what the status of this one is on NI, missed them on Lord Howe due to season. I will be trying the Phillip Is if at all possible, but will be sea watching at every possibility, would there be a best location to concentrate on sea watching early morning ie best light etc. ideally with a good value guesthouse near by. Thank you for confirmation that this route has stopped, it was never an easy one to book from UK when I visited last year, even Malaysian Airways know nothing despite their planes being used!  They were just weekly charters I believe rather than scheduled flights.    It is the UK Rutland Bird Fair this week so if the usual lady from CI is present I will discuss this with her.  For us in UK it is a long way via Perth but relatively ‘close’ via KL.  Mind you virtually no one in UK knows where CI is and they just say is that the same as Easter Is or wasn’t that where they expoded the atom bomb!   A great place to visit and in my top ten for quality. Dear Birders, Just a very brief update to say we had an excellent week on CI last week, as I was straight back to work on returning I haven’t had time to put any details together yet.  For those twitchers interested in CI vagrants we found a Chinese Pond Heron (Sum. plumage) and some ‘Black-winged’ Stilts (2) plus Whiskered Terns (2-3), Lesser Frigates 2 only definite. The regular seabirds were stunning as expected, Abbots Boobies particularly impressive over Margaret’s Lookout.  If anyone wants any specific details of best spots for the Frigates, Boobies etc from a photographers perspective please contact me directly .  A week wasn’t long enough if photography is your main objective especially as the two large frigates still confuse me despite seeing 1000’s!   Also if you want to see the Hawk owl prepare for a hard time- we only heard two distantly.  Crabs were something else……..amazing creatures.

Dear Ausbirders Just a quick post to say that hopefully we will be on Christmas Is. from Friday for a week staying in the ‘Captains Last Resort’ .  Having already discussed the ‘wrong’ time for a visit recently with Mike Carter and others I will be keen to look out any vagrants still lurking (or new arrivals) on the island.  Even at this late hour the trip looks a bit in the air due to the Icelandic ash cloud over the UK- I hope I can report something interesting next week!  Matthew Rodgers UK ===============================
