Hi all

Since 2014 we’ve been seeing Powerful Owls at Buchan Caves Reserve, East
Gippsland. Sightings have been increasing, and we are now seeing them on
50% of visits, and sometimes 2 birds.

They’ve been seen with a range of prey items including Common Brushtail,
Sugar Glider, Koala and Australian Magpie.

I’ve written an article about them, what, when and where we’ve seen them,

Len, Jack – there are plenty of records of PO in the mountain country of
East Gippsland on ALA, a couple on Birdata but few on eBird – is it lack of
visitation or are the birds declining do you think?

Jenny – I have mentioned you in the article. I saw online that you’d seen
them too. Can you add your observations to this?

Today I watched a prolonged chase of a Sharp-tailed Sandpiper (I believe –
it was moving fast) by two Little Ravens, near Beach Rd boat ramp at
Western Treatment Plant. We didn’t see the start, and we don’t know why
this sandpiper was chosen from a huge number of waders in the area. The
ravens chased the sandpiper constantly for about ten minutes, sometimes
both ravens, sometimes just one. The sandpiper weaved and dodged and
managed to stay just ahead of the ravens until finally it dropped into
vegetation, followed by one raven who picked it up and flew off with it.

At no time did the sandpiper attempt to join other waders, and no defence
or racket was raised by the other waders while this was happening. Did the
ravens single this bird out because it was weak? Or for another reason, or
do they make a random selection?

On searching I have found one published report of Little Ravens preying on
a STSandpiper at Cheetham wetlands, and another of Common Ravens preying on
Kittiwakes in North America.

Have others seen this?

Hi BA

The enormous, polluting Adani Carmichael coal mine proposal is possibly the
biggest threat to our birds and wildlife that we have yet seen.

The emissions from this mine will cancel out all our emissions reductions.
Basically, everything you’ve ever done to reduce your carbon footprint will
be a waste if this mine goes ahead.

It is predicted that the emissions from this mine will send global
temperature over 2 degrees above normal. Read more here:

scenario for many of our birds.

Luckily, Get Up are involved. As are just about every environmental
organisation in Australia including ACF, 350 Australia, Greenpeace and
traditional owners. We will need every bit of help from everyone to win

I have a media relations contact at Visit Victoria (formerly Tourism
Victoria) keen to promote wildlife events to journalists.

If you know of an event anywhere in Victoria that could use some promotion,
please email me details and link. Last minute is fine. She does a calendar
for the upcoming week every Monday.

Anything at all that you’d like to promote – bird counts, meetings,
conferences, open days, book launches, tree planting days, even regular
occurrences like pelagic boat trips or tours that have a special focus (eg.
Port Fairy Pelagic best time to see ….,). I can’t promise it will get
attention but I can promise to send it through to her.

If you have any questions let me know. If you’re not sure what to offer
journalists/whether your event is suitable we can chat.

Hi Birders

The You Yangs Protection Group are holding a photo competition on Facebook,
and they have a wildlife category.

Winners will be announced at a public meeting in Lara on 29th June.
Attendees at that meeting will be mostly local Lara, Little River and North
Geelong people, media, local business people, farmers and probably some
politicians.

I think it’s a great chance to showcase the diversity of wildlife of the
You Yangs region. Please enter!

Wow, that is amazing. There are fairly recent reports of Rose-crowneds in East Gippsland, and they were historically common around Mallacoota, so it seems possible that the odd vagrant could cross Bass Strait.
