    Hi all…
    Just at Palmerston treatment ponds today
    I’ll be honest and say I struggle at a distance with some Tern species
    I’d love some help with ID for this time of year from those in the know

    What I could see/no pics sorry only had my scope
    Was
    – Terns flying with a dusting of blackish grey on their bellies that was obvious at a distance..
    – Terns with a black cap that extended down onto their face under the eye but dark legs and reddish bill and white belly…

    Never been to these ponds
    I used to go to Leanyer ones years ago before they closed them to the public and saw Yellow wagtail and all sorts of ducks and some waders…not heaps at this one that I was expecting…although..as we progress closer to the end of the year…I imagine it will increase in activity

    Anyways…
    Any thoughts much appreciated before I complete my EBird checklist
    (Heard Chestnut Rails calling nearby in mangroves at the back and Mangrove Robins very vocal and sweet while calling and were fairly close for viewing and male/female Black necked storks, Common Sandpipers & Pied stilts etc… still some lovely species here)

  • ID Storm Petrel Thursday Is. QLD



  • ID assistance possible White-faced Storm Petrel.

    Greetings, we were heading over to Thursday Is (TI) on Sat. 13 September at 0910. We all spotted this small bird floating on the surface about 300m off shore from Hospital Point. The bird was not distressed and allowed us to approach in the dinghy, flying once when we got too close. Appreciate any assistance in getting a positive ID before submitting to Birdata. It is definitely a new bird for me and I am leaning towards White-faced Storm Petrel Thanks Jon and Laura Wren photos to follow.

  • Rufous Owls

    Hi all
    Am in the Darwin area for a little while longer but would love to see a Rufous Owl again
    I looked online and saw one recently sighted but in a strange area…
    Anyone had any luck anywhere lately as EBird wasn’t bringing many recent sightings

    Also was hoping to get Chestnut Rail at Buffalo Creek again…it’s been many years since my last sighting…anyone know of a recent sighting?
    Will have to check tides and go again

  • Vale David Stewart

    It is with a very heavy heart that I convey the news that David Stewart passed away last Thursday evening.

    Dave was a mentor and dear friend, and one of the greatest birders this country has seen. His incredible knowledge of birds and their calls enabled him to record a vast library of birdsong, published in various forms in his lifetime. He contributed all the sound recordings for the Morcombe & Stewart Guide to the Birds of Australia app. Later, Dave published his own app, the first definitive collection of Australian birdsong presented by subspecies. He also published a comprehensive app on the frog calls of Australia.

    We have lost an amazing man, someone who throughout his life encouraged greater awareness of our birds, championed their survival and shared his vast knowledge so willingly.

    Our thoughts go out to his son Alistair and other family members.

  • Sound recording workshops

    Last December I attended a sound recording workshop in Brisbane. Run over 2 and a half days, it took us through the basics of how to record bird song, prepare and upload audio for eBird checklists, and gave us plenty of time in the field. We had several staff from Cornell University, all of them eBird icons, plus a couple of notable Aussie birders to guide us. These workshops changed the way I think about birding! I’ve learned a lot of new  skills and when I’m birding I’m listening more – and recording where I can. 

    We need many more recordings of Australian species, even for many common birds. One objective is to get enough recordings to populate Merlin sound ID app so it works fully in Australia – it is a stunningly good tool when birding in Europe and North America. But in Australia it’s limited by the small number of species included in the app. If we get more birders recording more birds, this will change! 
    If you’re interested in attending a workshop, they’re running again, this time in Perth and Adelaide. Details below. 
    Try to get to a workshop if you’re in Perth or Adelaide. It will enhance your birding, and you’ll be making a real contribution to our knowledge of Australian birds, as well as helping to improve the Merlin app!

  • A bit special

    Hi Birders,
    My recent periodical offers (Emu and Bird Observer) have been for free – and very willing am I to see it all go to fellow birders – but I cant really give this one away.
    I can make it special just in case someone falls in love with it like I did (stop reading if you don’t think Bill Cooper is the best bird artist – ever).
    You will see these two large format volumes for  "Parrots of Australia" Forshaw and Cooper on eBay for $US 2000 and a well known Aussie Bookseller has a copy of this limited edition (1000 printed)  for $AU 1200. I would be happy to find a birder home for $AU 500 before I go to auction – or find a shelf somewhere.
    They are as new in original solander box – more details if interested.
