I was doing the rounds of the Roma St Parklands at lunch time when I saw a bronze cuckoo by the lake in the RSP – it was a small passerine about the size of a brown honeyeater, albeit broader in the body and a squarer tail. It had a couple of broad bars on its under tail coverts, barring on its chest and shining bronze-green wing coverts when angled in the sun, grey otherwise. Without binos I could see it had a brown eye but couldn’t discern an eye ring.
I suspect it was an immature Little-Bronze Cuckoo. It the first small cuckoo I’ve seen in an inner city location, and an unusual bird to see less than a kilometre from the concrete jungle. Is it likely to be migrating south?
The other passage migrant seen in the parklands is a Rufous Fantail, lurking in the “rainforest” section. There is also a Buff-banded Rail running around in the gardens that back onto Wickham Tce. There used to be a few running around the Spectacle Garden, but they disappeared years ago.
