On the weekend, rescuers at McDonalds Swamp near Kerang picked up more than 120 discarded ducks and waterbirds. Some appear to have had a wing (and some flesh) removed to provide evidence for a shooting competition, in which points are awarded for killing various species. All had been in the water since opening weekend, March 19/20.This morning, the Coalition Against Duck Shooting displayed these birds outside the Melbourne offices of the Department of Sustainability & Environment. They included three Plumed Whistling-ducks, a coot, a Musk Duck and an immature Purple Swamp-hen – not game species – and dozens of Grey Teal, Hardhead, Pacific Black Duck and Wood Duck, which may be legally shot. The fact that they were left behind puts paid to the hunters’ claim that they only shoot for food. Please contact your local MP and Ted Baillieu to register your opinion.
