Hi Anthony, Another spot to go would be the gannet colony at Muriwai not far from Auckland if you were there in breeding season. I also saw several species at Mt Aspiring National Park that I didn’t see elsewhere, although we were on holiday, not on a birding trip. If you didn’t want to buy a field guide, but have internet access,< http://nzbirdsonline.org.nz>, is an excellent site developed as a result of a collaboration by DOC (N.Z. conservation), OSNZ (Ornithological Society of New Zealand) and Te Papa (National Museum), so you might want to have a look at it. I hope you enjoy the trip. On 24/06/2014 5:23 PM, Anthony Katon wrote: Anthony, I am far from an expert, but have birded the south island while on work trips and on a family holiday. There are a few good web sites. Take the time to visit at least one off-shore sanctuary. We enjoyed: * pelagic cruise out of Kaikoura * Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project * Okarito Lagoon, including kiwi spotting tour * Stewart Island and Ulva Island (and I heard good things about the Kiwi trip there, but couldn’t go) * Otago Peninsula tour and cruise (Dunedin) * Plenty of other sites as we drove down the east coast of the south island * Zealandia (Karori) sanctuary in Wellington We missed a few good sites, but it was a family holiday with birding included. For a field guide, we used The Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand Paperback by Hugh Robertson and Barrie Heather. Their Hand Book to the birds of NZ is smaller and lighter. I found Where to Watch Birds in New Zealand by Kathy Ombler useful, and stayed in some of the bird-friendly accommodation she suggests. Much nicer to enjoy the dawn chorus in a B&B just out of town, rather than the roar of heavy vehicles in a motel on the main drag. _______________________________________________ Birding-Aus mailing list Birding-Aus@birding-aus.org To change settings or unsubscribe visit: http://birding-aus.org/mailman/listinfo/birding-aus_birding-aus.org

There is a new NZ field guide by Fitter and Merton. It’s a photographic guide (does have NZ Storm-Petrel!)

    Happy New Year everyone,

Not exactly what Nicole asked for, but there will in June be an on-line guide to the birds of New Zealand. It will be http://www.nzbirdsonline.org.nz/.

The site is currently only open to contributors, but should be a good resource as they are covering eggs and some photographed extinct birds from museum specimens, vagrants, both breeding and non breeding plumages, and ventral and dorsal flight photos.

It is a joint collaboration between Te Papa, the Ornithological Society of New Zealand, and the Department of Conservation with some Australians contributing photos.

    Hi,

Tom is talking about the ‘Hand Guide’, Dave about the ‘Field Guide’. The Hand Guide is an abridged version of the Field Guide: It contains the plates, maps and short descriptions of the Field Guide, but all the detailed text is taken out. Is there an updated version that covers New Zealand Storm-Petrel (there is only a foot note in my Field Guide: Heather, B. & H. Robertson (2005, 2nd ed.): The Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand.) There is also another site guide (besides Kathy Ombler’s book): Birds of New Zealand Locality Guide: Stuart Chambers.    Happy New Year,

    Nikolas

  • Dave Torr

I only got it last year for a trip – just checked and it is 2005 edition as well, so presumably comes in several forms.

Must be an old version, mine is a very skinny edition (brought it in Miranda bird obs in 2005) Tom

  • Dave Torr

ABout the size of Pizzey (at least my edition is) for a lot less birds! Also look at Where to watch Birds in NZ by Kathy Ombler for good sites

There is only one guide worth having, though it comes in 2 versions. It is the Field Guide (or Hand Guide) to New Zealand Birds by Heather and Robinson. The FG has more info but they both have the same plates.

I’ve used “Field Guide to the Birds of NZ” by Heather & Robertson. I’ve got the full version, which may be a bit bulky for carrying about on extensive walks, but I think that there is also a smaller field version too (pictures and descriptions but not the full text on breeding habits etc). Cheers Tom Wilson

    Hey Steve,

You may want to purchase a copy of ‘Birds of New Zealand – Locality Guide’ by Stuart Chambers. Usual cost is around $55. Another similar book is ‘Where to watch birds in New Zealand: more than 30 of the country’s best birding locations’ by Kathy Ombler. Another areas for site information is New Zealand Birding Sites at http://www.nzbirds.com/birding/birdwatching.html.

There are a couple of good guides, with perhaps the best being ‘The Field Guide to the Birds of New Zealand’, by Barrie Heather and Hugh Robertson, mainly because of the good words. For example it gives estimated numbers for species such as albatross and terns i.e. breeding location with estimated numbers. The plates are o.k. Also ‘The Hand Guide to the Birds of New Zealand’ by Hugh Robertson and Heather Barrie, which has less words / information. There is also an o.k ‘Field Guide to New Zealand Seabirds’ by Brian Parkinson.

Have a look at BirdingNZ.net at http://www.birdingnz.net. It’s a bit like Birding-aus and Australia’s Birdlines combined, with the two most relevant links being: . http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=3 for general birding discussion, and; . http://www.birdingnz.net/forum/viewforum.php?f=9 for bird sightings and alerts.

Also check out NZ birding pals at http://www.birdingpal.org/newzealand.htm.

    Hope this helps.
