New Ethnoornithology posts at Bob Gosford’s The Northern Myth blog

Dear all,

Here is a selection of some recent posts to my Northern Myth blog that relate to ethnoornithology.

It has been a busy first half of the year – particularly with two big sessions dedicated to ethnoornithology at two large ethnobiology conferences held on Vancouver Island in British Columbia in May.

At those conferences, firstly the Society of Ethnobiology conference at Victoria University followed by the International Society of Ethnobiology conference 5 hours drive away on the island at Tofino a week later, both featured sessions with valuable new research and information from ethnoornithology researchers from across the globe.

Oh, and while i was at the International Society of Ethnobiology I was elected as the Society’s representative in the Oceania and Pacific Islands region – so those of you lucky yo live in this wonderful part of the world may be hearing from me about that soon!

The abstracts from both conferences are included in the posts listed below.

I’ve also included a few other of my own thoughts on ethnoornithology, looking at work that’s been done in east Africa and my own research in Australia.

I look forward to your comments, suggestions and participation. Please also have a look at the website for the Ethnoornithology Research & Study Group at: http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/Ethnoornithology/

We look forward to new members the ERSG – joining is easy and only takes a few seconds. Please browse the recent – and not so recent – posts from our members – and of course when you join please tell us a little about yourself and your work!

1 – Birds, culture, language & people at the 33rd Society of Ethnobiology meeting– all of the Abstracts and a brief report and a few pix from the Society of Ethnobiology meeting on Vancouver Island at which I organised a session on ethnoornithology.

2 – Bird of the Week: Fischer’s Turaco (*Tauraco fischeri*)– a story about the value of ethnobiology, and ethnoornithology in particular. The Fischer’s Turaco is found only in the coastal forests of Kenya, Tanzania and southern Somalia on Africa’s east coast.

3 – Bird of the week – the Night Parrot resurfaces…again…maybe– a story about the Night Parrot, a relatively small, crepuscular parrot that prefers to shuffle about close to the ground and, like it’s closest taxonomic cousin the aptly-named Ground Parrot *Pezoporus wallicus*, it is nomadic across a vast area. here I have a look at some recent attempts to find the bird and what the original inhabitants of the land might be able to contribute to the search for this most elusive Australian birds.

4 – More birds, people and culture from ICE 2010 – Tofino, BC, Canada– a look at the second conference that I attended and at which I co-organised, with Fleur Ng’weno from Kenya, a session dedicated to ethnoornithology – with presenters from across the globe. All of the Abstratcts from the presenters in this session are discussed here.

5 – Roadkill of the week – What can you do with a dead bird?– another in a continuing series of tributes to just a few of the too-many birds that die at the hands of man – and our cars – on our highways.

Thats all for now. Please pass this email on to anyone you think may be interested in ethnornithology or ethnobiology.

Cheers and thanks for your support and interest,
